Avant-Garde Graphics: 1918 – 1934

Klucis, Gustav | 2005

Avant-garde artists of the 1920s and 1930s discovered a new role, that of designers for the printing industry--what is today known as graphic design. As illustrated by the numerous stunning, high quality, color reproductions in this book, designers stripped away printers' ornaments and drawn illustrations; they no longer created captions on the page; and they brought in abstract, geometrical forms, photographs, plain typefaces and simple lettering, white space, and asymmetrical layouts. Included are examples of posters, prints, book designs, and political and commercial ephemera. Avant-Garde Graphics focuses on the designs of many of the leading practitioners of the Modernist movement working between 1918 and 1934--from the Dutch members of the De Stijl and the German Bauhaus to the Constructivists of the USSR and central Europe. Artists include Jean Arp, Herbert Bayer, Theo van Doesburg, El Lissitzky, Liubov Popova, Vladimir and Georgii Stenberg, Solomon Telingater and others.
